I thought I'd add another run post as it's been a while. If you don't know and are reading this, I'm completing an ultra marathon in April 2017 for MacMillan.
It's been an up hill battle so far just to get back into the groove of running but this preparatory period has taught some interesting things about training.
The the first few weeks I was plagued with back ache and tightness in my calf. So much so, I was struggling to manage even twenty minutes continuous running.
However, since then, I have really been getting stronger and faster. When I previously trained for a triathlon I was able to manage a sub 20 minute 5km time - works out at 15.2km/h, which considering I had ever been an endurance athlete, I was quite pleased about.
To my horror, when I originally got out running, I was struggling to sustain even 12km/h over the 5km distance, if I could even reach 5km at all.
In this last week however, I've managed a 2 year 5km PB in both of my previous sessions and am feeling much fitter. The back ache is gone although the calf is still a bit tight. The good news is though, I fully suspect I will be able to ramp up the distance now I have that base beneath me.
Only another 100km to go!!
